Convenient and efficient

Before the coming of the bottle cork, glass bottles were sealed with all kinds of surprising things. These included leather, cloth, sealing wax and clay. Glass stoppers were used for a while, but they were hard to make and often broke the bottle when removed.

Cork bottle stoppers became synonymous with wine around the late 1600s when bottles became a more uniform size and shape. It was also found that cork allowed just enough air in to let the wine mature without oxidizing and spoiling. Bottles are laid on their side when stored, as this means less air passes through the cork. This in turn allows the wine to age for longer.

It’s hardly surprising that bottle corks became an obvious choice. Cork was a natural resource, easy to shape and provided a convenient and efficient stopper. And it still does to this day.

Alternative uses for cork bottle stoppers

In more recent times, wine corks have been used with great creativity for a multitude of different purposes. Bottle corks are light, versatile, and inexpensive, making them an increasingly popular crafting material. That’s why craft enthusiasts and sellers have been busy turning humble corks into stunning pieces of decorative art.

Some examples include chess pieces, coasters, bath mats, keyrings, dinner table placeholders and decorative wall art. Other ideas include trivets for hot pans, Christmas decorations, cork animals and cork frames for pictures and mirrors. The truth is, bottle corks are so versatile, the only limitation is your own imagination.
